Newbie

I wanted to let people know our situation. Our son was diagnosed with diabetes in August and with Celiac in November. We are the newest ones here to figuring out this lifestyle.

That probably showed in my doctor's visit last week. We were at a GI doctor appointment for follow-up after our biopsy. When I told the doctor that I had put our youngest on the GF diet too because he had all the symptoms, he was not happy. He didn't really chew me out, but I was feeling pretty stressed out with life and it was either the way he looked at me or how he said it, I burst into tears. It can be so frustrating sometimes. Wondering if you are doing everything right or not, thinking of the ten ways you goof in a day, here I thought I was doing something right. So we have taken our youngest off the diet for the next 2-3 weeks, then we are to get his blood tested and see where we go. Funny part? He's been off the diet for a week and no symptoms! Maybe I was wrong after all. Wouldn't that be great?

Monica,

I remember what it was like when I was first diagnosed with Celiac. My head was just spinning while trying to figure out what I could eat and even which ingredients were gluten free. If you need any advice on products that are really good, I can maybe help with that a little bit.

I don't think that it is such a bad thing that you put your younger son on a gluten free diet. I went to a GI specialist and he tried to tell me that I didn't have Celiac. I had to argue with him that my diet was helping and that I really did have an intolerance to gluten. My whole family is on a gluten free diet at home. They don't take it to such extremes when we go out to eat, but the only thing that has gluten in it is a box of cereal at our house.

I know how hard it is making the transition to eating gluten free. I have been on the diet for two years now and I still haven't figured out what I really like. I do know that at first, Sondra wouldn't try much of anything. My mom was making two of everything. She soon realized that it was just easier to keep me from getting contaminated if she didn't have all of that other stuff in the house. I don't know how hard/easy that transition could be made in your house, but it might help your son out. It just does make things easier when you aren't worrying so much when in your own house.

Good luck with the tests. I hope all goes well even if the diagnosis is positive for celiac.

Kara,

Thanks for the note! Yesterday, our youngest was home sick. I instantly wanted to yank him off all gluten products. But, it might have really been the flu, he seemed fine today.

I can see good and bad if he is diagnosed with celiac also. Good, then the two boys can encourage each other, or commiserate with each other, then they won't be the only one eating GF, it's easier to make a small meal for two than one.
The bad, is just knowing he has to have this the rest of his life also, and it is more expensive having two on the diet instead of one! That's trivial, but it does play in there sometimes. I think it will be better when we can get our initial medical bills paid off, which looks like soon with the tax returns and rebates coming! Yeah!

Have a good week!

Monica,

Your son probably had the flu. I have been home for the past two days with what I would say is the flu.

It seems that the celiac doesn't affect my health near as much as the flu can.

Good Luck with the gluten free diets.
